Main Plant, St. Paul, Minn.

These new industries employ about 5000 people, $15,000,000 of capital, and comprise one of the largest indus-
trial establishments of modern times.

A NEW DEPARTURE

HAT IS MOST characteristic of this eager, pushing, pro-
gressive, pulsating twentieth century ? It is the conversion
of hitherto waste products into useful and artistic articles of
general utility and durability. A leading American journal
said editorially :

" One of the most notable applications of inventive genius, executive
management, unlimited capital and tremendous energy to the creation of
new industries out of hitherto waste products, has now culminated in prac-
tical success, but has been accomplished in less than three years. The
whole affair is characteristic of American enterprise. It is of peculiar inter-
est to the people of our own and other countries, because these industries
manufacture staple and varied products, that are used in every human
habitation, from the wire grass that is produced upon thousands of square
miles of hitherto useless lands that occur in many sections on the American
continent."

What is Prairie Grass
Furniture ?

It is made from wire grass
{Car ex strtcta.)

This isn't a grass at all, as
each blade makes one contin-
uou's solid fiber several feet
long - . Wire grass is so tough
as to be quite indestructible,
stock will not eat it, and no
other plant thrives on thou-
miles of

this indestructible fiber for furniture-making requires the largest nr3 : r : p m arc;hpQ in thp nnrfh
harvesting operations anywhere in the world. prairie marsnes in me nortn-

west.

These vast areas of worthless lands produced only a useless pest, until
the American Grass Twine Company perfected means of utilizing the wire
grass. How they did it reads like a romance. Genius, capital, labor and
experience co-operated to solve the problem, until now this most indestructi-
ble of fibers is converted directly into a pliable twine of great durability by
mechanical processes that preserve unimpaired the wonderful strength of
the wire grass as well as its lovely surface and unique soft, green color.

Wire grass twine is peculiarly adapted to the fabrication of furniture,
baby carriages and household furnishings of all kinds. The products of
this department of this great industry are sold by us.

The beautiful surface and delightful color of prairie grass furniture is an
unapproachable blend of green, that bespeaks the divinity in nature. Its
beauty is beyond comparison because peculiar to itself, and can be but
faintly suggested by the color
printing hereon.

Because of its distinctive
color effect, wire grass furni-
ture or wall coverings and
mattings or rugs, blend with
their surroundings into an
artistic harmony. The artis-
tic designs obtainable are
quite the despair of workers in
other materials. In strength

and durability, furniture made Camp for Workers in Wire Grass Harvest.

rivals anything of the kind
heretofore known.

The comfort of wire
grass furniture must be felt
to be appreciated. It com-
bines luxurious ease with
smoothness and firmness
that at once impress one
with its remarkably lasting
qualities.

Adaptable to all pur-
poses, useful at all seasons.
The sanitary excellence
of these goods is beyond

question. They cannot hold and will not accumulate germs, in this respect

being unlike furniture made from any other material.

Above all, articles made from wire grass fiber are not expensive. Con-
sidering their merits they are by far the best and cheapest goods on the

market.

A revolution in furnishing and in decoration is being caused by the use

of this hitherto waste fiber from the prairies of America in the homes of the

world. The grass twine industry as a whole is one of the newest and most

important of modern industrial enterprises, employing millions of capital and

thousands of workers at home and abroad, and is protected throughout by

patents in all the leading countries of the globe.

Prairie grass furniture is made in over three hundred original and novel

styles and designs, in chairs, settees, tables, stands, tabourets, couches,

lounges, divans, davenports,

window seats, hall seats,

baby carriages, go-carts,

bassinets, music stands,

flower stands, jardinieres,

hampers and baskets of

all kinds.

In color, beautiful.
In design, artistic.
In use, comfortable.
In durability, like iron.
Useful at all seasons.
Adapted to all places.
Sanitary in every respect.
In price, reasonable.

Spinning Wire Grass With Swine.

The mills for this purpose employ 3000 hands. See preceding
and following pages for pictures of mills.

At Oshkosh, Wis.

The smoothness and finish of wire grass furniture is almost wonderful
in its perfection. Furthermore, prairie grass furniture is adapted to all
purposes and is useful at all seasons. It is the furnishing par excellence
for spring, summer, autumn and winter, in all localities and under all
conditions. Its delightful color and artistic excellence make it cool and
inviting in warm weather, yet it also imparts such a warmth and harmonious
effect whenever used in cool weather as to peculiarly adapt wire grass
products for winter furnishing as well. Indeed, the popularity of wire grass
furniture among many of the best families and in some of the most elegantly
furnished homes in this and other countries, is largely due to its unique
desirability for furnishing the winter home. For offices, clubs, halls and
other interiors it is equally attractive at all seasons.

At West Superior, Wis.

The following catalogue shows in miniature nearly two hundred of our
various designs. We can supply any or all of these at a moment's notice.
We also manufacture special designs on order.
